The Opportunity
WSDOT Technology Services Division (TSD) is seeking a skilled and motivated professional to join our Infrastructure Services team as a member of the Managed Applications Server Support Team. This position plays a vital role in ensuring WSDOT’s technical infrastructure remains reliable, secure, and aligned with business needs by independently administering and supporting a wide range of server technologies. This includes Internet Information Services (IIS) administration, load balancing, application acceleration, SSL offloading, web application firewall configuration, and server support for critical business areas across the agency. The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise in server administration, troubleshooting, and configuration, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal partners, manage competing priorities, and contribute to ongoing improvements in infrastructure reliability and security.
What to Expect
Infrastructure Services provides technical expertise, management and strategic leadership for these technologies and support assistance to dependent technologies. Infrastructure Services customer and partner relationships span the agency and extend to many inter-agency and vendor affiliates. Tumwater based staff travel statewide, maintaining services for over 230 sites in support of all agency business units.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the IT System Administrator will:
- Perform administration of agency cloud based and WSDOT hosted servers supporting essential applications.
- Create, manage, and maintain documentation of each server’s use case, users, interdependent systems, security risks, and lifecycle.
- Ensure timely patching and updates to operating systems, installed applications, and services in accordance with federal, state, and agency laws/policies.
- Troubleshoot reported issues, analyze system logs.
- Provide consultation and liaison services between WSDOT business teams and Enterprise Server Support.
- Communicate required infrastructure changes, scheduled and unscheduled outages to WSDOT business units.
- Liaison between Cyber Security and Business units on mitigated and accepted security risks.
- Coordinate business backup needs and schedules.
- Promote, support, and directly participate in WSDOT's cybersecurity program through strict adherence to all relevant policies, practicing good cybersecurity hygiene, and following security best practices.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:
- Technical Expertise: Working knowledge and experience working with Microsoft Windows-based operating systems and supporting enterprise-level applications, services, and infrastructure components.
- Infrastructure Configuration & Management: Demonstrated ability to configure, deploy, and maintain both cloud-based and on-premises computing environments to required specifications, including integrated firewalls and security settings.
- System Monitoring & Maintenance: Skilled in monitoring system resources, applying timely patches and updates, managing backups, and coordinating decommissioning activities in alignment with business requirements and security policies.
- Technical Troubleshooting & Analysis: Proficiency in diagnosing and resolving infrastructure-related issues, analyzing system logs, and implementing corrective actions to restore services and maintain system reliability.
- Documentation & Lifecycle Management: Ability to create, maintain, and update documentation related to system configurations, use cases, users, dependencies, security risks, and lifecycle activities.
- Communication & Collaboration: Strong communication skills to coordinate with business units, technology teams, and cybersecurity staff regarding outages, upgrades, security risks, and infrastructure changes.
- Security & Compliance: Commitment to following security best practices, including MFA usage, password policy adherence, access reviews, and prompt reporting of suspicious activity.
- Respect and Equity: Demonstrated ability to contribute to a work environment that fosters respect, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all.
In addition to the above, the following are required:
- Ability to travel to WSDOT sites statewide.
- Ability to provide after-hours on-call support on a rotational basis to maintain system reliability.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Cloud Services & Hosting Expertise: Advanced knowledge of cloud-hosted services and service providers, including configuration, management, and integration with on-premises systems.
- Database Administration: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, including configuration, performance tuning, and maintenance of database systems.
- Networking & Infrastructure: Advanced understanding of server networking concepts, including TCP/IP protocol, domain naming services (DNS), and enterprise network integration.
- Testing & Process Validation: Familiarity with testing methodologies and processes to ensure system stability and performance.
