Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the permanent, full-time position of System Administrator II in Information Technology.

The System Administrator II is responsible for designing, implementing, testing, administering and maintaining IT systems and their associated software/hardware, including: network, storage, virtualization, mobile device, application and desktop delivery; Microsoft directory services, windows server systems and services; Linux platforms; Office 365 & Microsoft Azure platforms.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Plans, designs, installs, configures, maintains & manages:
  • Network, storage, compute and virtualization systems
  • MS Office 365 and Azure environments
  • Virtual desktop and application environments
  • Monitoring systems, patch management, backup and recovery
  • IT operations playbooks, practices & procedures
  • Assists with the design, development, implementation, & maintenance of IT systems high availability, backup and disaster recovery, management & monitoring systems, systems maintenance scheduling & automation
  • Supports investigation of incidents throughout the server, network and client infrastructures.
  • Provides guidance & documented standards on policies, practices & procedures to ensure availability of data & technology infrastructure
  • Reviews and health checks of existing environments
  • Performs First-Line of escalations and root cause analysis
  • Provides reporting and analysis as needed for network, systems and security analysts
  • Supports development of RFP and projects as required
  • Works alongside Architecture to ensure systems are documented and future plans are in place 
  • Other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
  • At least seven years enterprise IT experience
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or Information Technology or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A professional designation in information technology such as Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSE), etc. is preferred
  • Experience working with the following fields is an asset:
  • Identity and Access Management
  • Enterprise Applications
  • Microsoft 365 Governance
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Cloud Services / Office 365 Administration
  • Knowledge of Mobile Device Management
  • Strong organization and documenting skills
  • Experience with Linux, Windows & Network Operating Systems
  • Experience with Network, Storage, Compute and Virtualization Systems
  • Working knowledge of middleware technologies & platforms (e.g., databases, web server, application servers, etc.)
  • Solid understanding of LAN and WAN networking
  • Demonstrated ability to foster strong working relationships
Security Clearance Requirements: This position requires the successful applicant to pass a security clearance check.
 
Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

WORK STATUS: One permanent, full-time position
 
HOURS OF WORK: 8:30am-4:30pm, Monday to Friday; 35 hours per week. Required to participate in a on-call rotation and occasional overtime, which may be unscheduled.  Flex options to work outside of these hours  may be available
 
SALARY: Information Services Level 6; $52.89 per hour, as per the collective agreement between NSGEU Local 222 and the Halifax Regional Municipality.
 
WORK LOCATION: 13th Floor Barrington Tower, Halifax. Travel to throughout HRM facilities and other locations maybe required when needed.
