Position Overview

The Systems Administrator is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Town’s computer networks and related systems. This role installs, organizes, and supports the hardware, software, and infrastructure that connect computers and technology both internally and to external networks. The Systems Administrator provides hands-on technical support, manages user accounts, oversees asset management, and serves as the primary liaison with the Town’s IT vendor(s).


This position supports fewer than 100 staff members across four locations within the Town of La Plata. The role will be expected to visit each site at least once per week to ensure IT needs are being met. 


Starting Salary Range: $61,750 – $71,012 annually ($29.69 – $34.14/hour), based on experience
Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt

Requirements

Essential Functions

The following duties are considered essential and are fundamental to the successful performance of this position:

  • Administer, monitor, and maintain all network systems, servers, and related infrastructure.
  • Install, configure, and update hardware and software to ensure optimal system performance.
  • Provide tier 1 and tier 2 technical support for employees, including basic helpdesk functions.
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls across systems.
  • Serve as the liaison with Dataprise (IT vendor), coordinating external technical support, project needs, and escalations.
  • Troubleshoot network, hardware, and software issues, escalating when necessary.
  • Maintain system documentation, configuration records, and asset inventory.
  • Oversee system backups, data recovery processes, and ensure security compliance.
  • Apply patches, updates, and security fixes to maintain system integrity.
  • Monitor system performance and proactively identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintain and support local networks, printers, and peripheral equipment.
  • Support cybersecurity initiatives, including endpoint protection, password management, and awareness training.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational IT policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in planning and implementation of technology upgrades, migrations, and new projects.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are considered secondary to the position’s core functions but are necessary to support departmental and Town-wide objectives:

  • Assist in developing and updating IT-related policies, procedures, and training materials.
  • Provide user training on new software, tools, or system features.
  • Research and recommend new technologies, tools, or practices that could improve efficiency.
  • Support audiovisual equipment and conferencing systems as needed.
  • Provide input during IT budget planning by identifying equipment/software needs.
  • Assist with vendor management beyond Dataprise (e.g., software subscriptions, hardware purchases).
  • Contribute to special projects or cross-department initiatives involving technology.

Qualifications & Competencies

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2-4 years of progressive experience in systems administration, network support, or help desk roles
  • Strong knowledge of the Windows operating system and Office 365 administration

Licenses & Certifications

  • Relevant IT certifications strongly preferred, such as:
  • CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Cloud+
  • Microsoft Certified: Systems Administrator / Azure Administrator
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
