An employee in this class performs professional technical work in the administration, maintenance, and optimization of the County's network infrastructure. The position ensures secure and reliable connectivity across all County facilities, manages network equipment and services, and supports related systems that enable daily operations. In a small-team environment, this role also assists with limited server and workstation support when necessary. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Information Technology Director and evaluated through performance metrics, documentation, and collaboration outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities/Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Design, configure, and maintain network infrastructure including switches, firewalls, wireless access points, VPN connections, and internet circuits.
             Monitor and optimize network performance, capacity, and availability using analytic tools.
             Implement and maintain network security policies including segmentation, firewall rules, and threat prevention measures.
            Manage network addressing, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and routing to ensure efficient and secure connectivity.
            Coordinate with vendors and County departments on network-related projects such as fiber expansions, new facility builds, or connectivity upgrades.
            Maintain accurate network documentation including topology diagrams, configuration baselines, and hardware inventory.
            Support and maintain voice systems (VoIP) and coordinate with providers for maintenance or troubleshooting.
           Administer and monitor network backup systems, logging tools, and monitoring platforms to identify and resolve issues proactively.
           Assist with network portions of server and virtualization environments, ensuring reliable connectivity and redundancy.
           Participate in planning and implementation of disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
           Provide limited assistance to the helpdesk and systems teams, when necessary, due to workload or critical incidents.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Strong knowledge of enterprise networking concepts including VLANs, routing, switching, VPN, and wireless technologies (Meraki, Cisco, etc.).
Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks (NIST, Zero Trust) and network hardening techniques.                                                                                                               

Working knowledge of server operating systems (Windows Server 2019/2022, Linux) sufficient to support network integration.
Working knowledge of workstation operating systems (Windows 10/11) sufficient to support endpoint connectivity.
Ability to plan and coordinate daily network monitoring and system checks.
Demonstrated ability to document configurations, maintain version control, and follow change management procedures.
Familiarity with basic scripting or automation tools (PowerShell, Python, APIs) preferred.
Understanding of AI concepts is beneficial but not required.

Desirable Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a related area and 2 - 4 years of experience or 5-10 years experience in the field or in a related area.   Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field experience in a varied Server & Workstation Operating System, Network Infrastructure & Design, Network Security Policies & Devices, Network Topologies & Wiring environment.
