Responsibilities & Qualifications

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) was established as a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1962. The NICHD mission is to lead research and training to understand human development, improve reproductive health, enhance the lives of children and adolescents, and optimize abilities for all. Components of the NICHD have differing environments and needs. Operating environments include UNIX, Linux, Windows, and MAC. Similarly, software for system operation, management, and application support varies among divisions. 

  

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Maintaining computer networks and systems including software, mainframes, VPNs, routers and other physical hardware. 
  • Installing and configuring network equipment to update or fix hardware or software issues. 
  • Updating virus protection software to keep data and communications protected. 
  • Monitoring computer systems to improve network performance for computer systems and networks. 
  • Communicating networking issues to other employees and management, especially in training new users. 
  • Fixing software and hardware configuration issues for users on-demand or from inspection of the systems. 

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AREAS PREFERRED:   

  • Familiarity with Dell Supermassive firewalls is preferred. 
  • Familiarity with Cisco firewalls is preferred. 
  • Dell Certified Professional Certification with emphasis in Data Center Networking is preferred 
  • Familiarity with Cloud technologies is preferred. 
  • Prefer strong skills in the following key areas including strategic thinking, multi-tasking, time management, planning and executing to a defined schedule. 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Eight (8) or more years’ experience building and operating mission critical networks. 
  • Eight (8) or more years’ experience in network design, major routing protocols, topology design, network hardware, device configuration and traffic engineering. 
  • Eight (8) or more years’ hands-on experience with Dell network hardware and software. 
  • Three (3) more years’ implementing Spine/Leaf network topology. 

 MINIMUM EDUCATION:  

Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Experience 

with various storage solutions. Seven (7) years of applicable experience may be substituted for 

degree requirements.
