Scope of Work

The Network Administrator - Tier 1 is an entry-level role responsible for supporting the City of Midland's network infrastructure. The network administrator is responsible for maintaining the networks that keep the City of Midland running. The individual will be involved in maintaining VoIP systems, and assisting in network design, implementation, and maintenance.

Essential Job Duties

  • Assist in the configuration, installation, and troubleshooting of VOIP telephony and related systems.
  • Provide basic support for Cisco and Extreme routers, switches, wireless infrastructure, and related network hardware.
  • Monitor the network for outages or inefficiencies and report to senior administrators.
  • Work closely with Tier 2 and 3 administrators to escalate and resolve complex network issues.
  • Document all actions, issues, and resolutions.
  • Participate in regular training and upskilling sessions.
  • Ensure compliance with security policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with other IT team members and departments to ensure the network infrastructure meets organizational needs.
  • Stay current with the latest network technologies and trends and recommend improvements.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours support and issue resolution as needed.
  • Subject to recall 24/7.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

  • Knowledge of network protocols, network security, and network infrastructure.
  • Experience with Cisco and Extreme networking devices is a plus.
  • Experience using SolarWinds is a plus.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to analyze and resolve technical issues.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and LDAP is preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical materials.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Willingness to learn and take on new challenges.
  • Physical and Environmental ConditionsThis job may require sitting or standing for extended periods of time, as well as the occasional lifting of equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Minimum Education, Experience, and Certification
  • An Associate Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related degree plus one year of experience in a related field is required. Three years experience may be substituted for the Associate's degree requirement.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must obtain Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) within 6 months of hire.
  • Must obtain Lean Six Sigma White Belt within 6 months of hire.
