Network Administrator Positions

Nature of Work

Under general supervision, performs work of considerable difficulty supporting the strategic function and administration of the enterprise network infrastructure. This includes Campus, Datacenter, Remote Sites, Cloud, and third-party network connectivity. Services include VoIP, Switching, Routing, VPN, Firewall, Virtual Networking, Wireless and related systems throughout the County; performs related work as assigned.

Occasional after-hours work may be required to address urgent issues, perform system maintenance, or implement planned upgrades. Establishing and following best practices for user support and system changes is critical to maintaining operational efficiency. This position also requires close collaboration with other Information Technology support teams to ensure seamless integration and effective problem resolution across different technical areas.

Please note: Presently, this position is up to 75% remote work and 25% minimum in office time. When working remotely, 1 hour response time is required for urgent IT matters and is subject to change at any time.   

The full range for this position is $76,684.00 - $111,785.00 annually. Starting salary will depend on qualifications. This position is exempt from overtime.

This position will require the successful completion of a Criminal Justice Information Services fingerprint and background clearance within 90 days of employment, this must be maintained throughout employment.  

Typical Duties

  • Oversees the purchase, installation, and maintenance of enterprise infrastructure equipment and/or software 
  • Analyzes, administers and maintains voice, video, and/or communication circuits
  • Maintains network devices by applying patches and performing firmware upgrades
  • Maintains network security and ensures compliance with security policies and procedures
  • Configures switches, routers, firewalls, network taps, and cryptographic devices
  • Interfaces with vendors to ensure appropriate resolution during network outages or periods of reduced performance
  • Develops and maintains internal knowledge transfer and network topology documentation
  • Maintains lifecycle asset management of infrastructure hardware, software, warranty, maintenance, and support
  • Participates and may lead in special projects as required
  • Occasional participation in an on-call rotation for support of systems outside of normal business hours
  • Evaluate risk and vulnerability reports 
  • Participate in change management meetings
  • Mentor and train network administrators
  • Participate in technical RFPs/RFIs
  • Responsible for Cisco Call Manager enterprise services that may include Emergency Operations Support (Hotline creation, call trees, etc.)
  • Responsible for up-to-date infrastructure documentation of countywide communication circuits and services across the County
  • Interfaces with vendors during special projects requiring professional services
  • Conducts research on network products, services, protocols, and standards to remain well-informed of developments in the network and security industry, technologies, and best practices then provides knowledge-based recommendations to management
  • Maintains and reviews infrastructure contracts with leadership
  • Responds to customer tickets regarding requests and/or issues 
  • Participate in disaster recovery administration and routine testing to ensure continuity of services
  • Performs phone set changes/moves/adds/deletes and related programming
  • Participates in cost analysis, department budgeting, short- and long-range planning and development of departmental objectives
  • Other duties as assigned
 
 
Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: walking; working with and around other staff and County employees; dealing with interruptions; repetitive motion (hand-wrist) for keyboarding; vision-acuity (near) for monitoring PC screen data; Color vision necessary for working with color coded cables; hearing and speech (ordinary conversation) for communicating with staff and customers; touch (finger dexterity) for keyboarding; Environmental hazards include electrical hazards associated with working with computers, servers and circuits, and potential for falls from ladders.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree in computer science or related field, with four years of increasingly responsible experience in telecommunications and network infrastructure, including two years of lead administration; OR any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Additional Requirements:  Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification or higher.  Ability to obtain Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification within 18 months of hire date.

The candidate will be responsible for leading and participating in work on multiple projects, and must maintain high levels of professional conduct and work quality.

This position is exempt from overtime.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of:  

  • Network protocols including TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP, MPLS
  • Overlay technologies like SDN, Vxlan, MPBGP eVPN etc.
  • Cisco/Nexus network equipment including routers, switches, firewalls, firepower, IOS and NXOS operating system
  • Cisco Call Manager configuration, operation, and maintenance
  • Cisco Call Manager migration to cloud PSTN softphone
  • Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE)
  • Network security practices
  • Principles and practices of project planning and implementation
  • Wireless networking, AnyConnect VPN, Solarwinds, Umbrella
Skill In:
  • Incident management, change management, and knowledge management
  • Basic knowledge of risk management practices
  • Cyber and privacy requirements to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of enterprise assets  
  • Working with third-party vendors; managing contracts and procurement processes
  • Visio diagrams and asset management
